Crouched at water's smooth edge at dawn

Crouched at water’s smooth edge at dawn
affords a plainer apprehension
of the enormous, undulating creature
laid out in the bay, cheek skyward

I wonder if your sleep stirs,
waves and wakes,

and how we kiss, how each
sad nuzzle, as one animal to another,
carries you with me, keeps me onward

and how no other silence can dream you
as I dream you, and how real,
how real

and light
that is like air

And mine are the day’s first toe-trotting animal
tracks up and down the damp, strong strand
the crystal moon has made with the sea
